Dalveen Film Society presents: ORION International Film Festival
After the huge success of the Inaugural Dalveen International Film Festival in 2023, The Dalveen Film Society will host its second ORION International Film Festival on Saturday February 24, 2024. The event will be a celebration of film, food and wine.
The ORION International Film Festival is dedicated to finding original, thought-provoking short and feature-length films that push the boundaries of storytelling. Founded in Australia, the ORION International Film Festival aims to recognise original and inspiring films by independent and new filmmakers. In 2024, the ORION International Film Festival will again hold two screening events – the first in the small township of Dalveen, located in the picturesque Granite Belt Region of Southern Queensland, as part of the Bi-Annual Apple and Grape Festival, and the second in Berlin, Germany’s political and cultural capital.
The Dalveen Film Society was established in 2020 and in 2024 will enter its fourth year of regular film screenings. The film society was founded by a group of committed locals after the Dalveen Sports Club and the Dalveen Rural Fire Brigade raised more than $30,000 in a joint initiative to install quality cinema facilities within the Dalveen Hall. Since then, the Dalveen Film Society has screened eighteen films to an audience of more than 1000, with people travelling from far and wide to attend the bimonthly screenings.
Granite Belt local filmmaker Elliot Spencer founded the ORION International Film Festival in 2017. Raised in Southeast Queensland’s Darling Downs Region, Elliot has a diverse background in documentary, commercial, narrative, and avant-garde filmmaking. Despite involvement in international projects, Elliot remains firmly connected to the Granite Belt, citing it as a grounding influence.
Why a short film? With their cost-effective and swift production, short films embody an immediate, explorative, experimental, conscientious, and authentic storytelling platform. This immediacy fosters a closer connection to the world, engaging audiences in profound, informative, empathetic, and uplifting ways, distinguishing short films as dynamic and impactful cinematic expressions. ORION showcases top-tier short films and unveils emerging talent from both local and international landscapes.
The ORION International Film Festival will comprise two sessions at the Dalveen Hall. The first will screen a full-length feature film, and the second a curation of short films. Throughout the afternoon homemade food, good wine (along with other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages), and cinema favourites (ice-creams, popcorn, and lollies) will be available for purchase.
